Cecelia “Cece” Otto is a classically trained singer, composer, international best-selling author and music historian who has performed in venues all over the world both as a soloist and in ensemble She specializes in performing American popular music from the 19th and early 20th centuries and is the founder of An American Songline®.

Early Life

Cecelia Otto was born in Minnesota on November 16, 1976. Her first public performance came when she sang “Maybe” from the musical Annie at eight years old. She studied music throughout her academic career, beginning with high school at the Perpich Center for Arts Education, followed by a dual bachelor’s degree program (in music and linguistics) at Macalester College in St. Paul, MN, and then a unique dual Master’s Degree in voice and composition from the Lamont School of Music at the University of Denver. She also spent a year studying the Irish language and Irish traditional music in Cork, Ireland.

Career

After finishing graduate school, Cecelia otto sang with various ensembles both in Denver and Chicago. While living in Chicago, she developed the idea of a singing travelogue that followed the Lincoln Highway, America’s first transcontinental highway. Otto named the project An American Songline after the Australian Aboriginal concept of songlines, as outlined by Bruce Chatwin in his book The Songlines. Otto completed the project in 2013, the centennial of the Lincoln Highway, performing 30 concerts in venues along the route over the course of six months. Performed alongside local accompanists, her repertoire consisted of popular songs from the first few decades of the 1900s, as well as other songs known to have been performed locally in that era. In 2015, she published a memoir of her travels as well as recorded a companion CD to her book. Expanding the American Songline concept, Otto then went on to create other musical programs around historic themes, using vintage songs to illustrate aspects of American history. Her program The Songs of World War I, created in 2017 to mark the anniversary of America’s entry in the conflict, was endorsed by the World War I Centennial Commission in Washington DC. Her program about the women’s suffrage movement in the United States, titled “Centennial of Suffrage,” debuted in November of 2019, and has been performed for both in-person and virtual audiences all over the world including the US, Canada, Europe, and Australia. In 2022, Otto announced her next American Songline program will explore Otto also creates custom programs for historic sites and is an active member of several regional and national historical groups. She has written books, recorded albums, and given presentations based on her research.
