Anne Marie Waters - June 2016

Anne Marie Waters is a British political activist who is the director of Sharia Watch UK, an organisation launched in the UK on the 24 April 2014.[1][2] In January 2016, Waters launched Pegida UK in conjunction with activist Tommy Robinson and politician Paul Weston.[3]

Political career

Waters has made two unsuccessful attempts to be selected as a Labour candidate, first seeking selection for South Swindon, for which she gave a member of the Central Committee of the Worker-communist Party of Iran as her personal reference.[4] Later, she was shortlisted to be Labour's candidate in Brighton Pavilion.[5] She was initially chosen to stand as a UKIP candidate in the London Assembly election, 2016, but was de-selected when her role in Pegida UK became public.[6]

Waters contested the 2014 Lambeth Council election for UKIP, where she finished in 9th place.

At the 2015 general election, Waters stood as the UKIP candidate in the seat of Lewisham East in South-east London, finishing in third place with 9.1% of the vote.

Waters was again chosen to be the UKIP candidate for Lewisham East in the 2017 General Election but was de-selected after party leader Paul Nuttall described her views as "way above and beyond party policy".[7]

Waters has announced her intention to stand in the 2017 UKIP Leadership election, during which Bill Etheridge called for her expulsion from the party over her inflammatory comments about Islam.[8]

Political views

Waters has been described as hard-right.[8]

She has been criticised for her association with far-right politicians and organisations, including her praise of Geert Wilders and Marine Le Pen.[9] She was a member of the senior management of the anti-Islam group Pegida UK alongside former leader of the English Defence League Tommy Robinson and leader of Liberty GB Paul Weston.[10]

She has criticised the Catholic Church for its stances on contraception, abortion, and LGBT rights.[11]
