Anneloes Smitsman (born June 3, 1974) is a Dutch futurist, systems scientist,[1] award-winning pioneer in human development and systems change,[2] and award-winning bestselling author.[3] She is the founder and CEO of EARTHwise Centre, a non-profit company providing education, leadership, research, system design, and publications in human development, governance, social innovation, and systems change for a thriving world and future.[4]

Through her research and pioneering work, Anneloes Smitsman has contributed significantly in the fields of leadership, education, human development, governance, systems science, systemic transformation, sustainability, and regenerative economics.[2]

Early Life and Education

Smitsman was born in Wijchen, the Netherlands, to A.W. Smitsman, a retired associate professor in ecological psychology from the Radboud University in Nijmegen, and C. Smitsman-Cornet, a former quality care manager of the Radboud Hospital in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. Smitsman began learning to play piano at 8 and initially explored becoming a concert pianist, but later had to shift her career focus due to a chronic wrist injury.

At 16, she was elected as a member of the provincial European Youth Parliament (EYP) of Gelderland, the Netherlands. Several months later, she was elected as a national delegate for the EYP of the Netherlands, after which she was elected as an international delegate for the Dutch delegation of the EYP at the European level. She continued as a member of the international EYP organizing committee from 1990-1993 and organized the EYP Conference in Budapest in 1993.[5]

Smitsman completed her Bachelor's degree in Law from Nijmegen University in 1994 and her Master's degree in Law and Judicial Political Science (JPW) from Leiden University, the Netherlands, in 1997. During the last year of her law studies at Leiden University, she embarked on an exchange program with Pretoria University from 1996-1997 to write her Master's thesis Tension within Democracy – a democratic challenge, South Africa as a case study.[2]

In 1998, Smitsman was awarded two special scholarships by the Australian National University for conducting her Ph.D. research at the Graduate Program of Politics and International Relations at the Department of Political Sciences, the Research School of Social Sciences, Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra. Her Ph.D. research focussed on institutional design for the future based on indigenous cosmologies of time and governance models for planetary stewardship. During this period, she co-authored the widely cited journal article “Placing Welfare States: The Netherlands as a Crucial Test Case” with her former Ph.D. supervisor Prof. Dr. Robert E. Goodin, published in the Journal of Comparative Policy Analysis Research and Practice, April 2000.[6] In 2000 she decided not to complete her Ph.D. at the ANU and embarked on her personal journey of transformation, planetary healing, and indigenous wisdom.

In 2014, Smitsman started her Ph.D. research as an external researcher at the Maastricht Sustainability Institute (formerly ICIS), where she obtained her degree of Doctor in December 2019 from the School of Business and Economics, Maastricht University the Netherlands.[7] Her Ph.D. Dissertation Into the Heart of Systems Change[8] is being implemented worldwide for systemic transformation in economics, education, politics, and governance through her proposed Transition Plan for a Thrivable Civilization.[9]

Career

Sustainability Education and Social Innovation

During her 8 years in Australia from 1998 to 2006, Smitsman worked as a life coach and developed educational programs for schools and businesses to develop ecological literacy, sustainability competencies, and wisdom-based leadership.

In 2006, Smitsman moved with her former husband to Mauritius and became a mother of their two sons. She designed what became the first solar-passive eco house in Mauritius. She started to train communities and schools in their ecological literacy development as part of her former company ELIA-Ecological Living In Action,[10] until she resigned in 2015 after their divorce. She was the Project Initiator of One Future One Planet (OFOP) Mauritius in 2013-2014, an international project for building sustainable communities, locally and globally.[10]

In 2007, Smitsman became actively involved in the cultural heritage protection of the oral history and local legends of the descendants of the slaves and maroons in Mauritius. Her work with local stakeholders and UNESCO consultants led to Le Morne Mountain becoming a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008.[11] She continued to carry out this stewarding role until mid-2016 to ensure that the slave heritage trails as per the Le Morne Management plan were opened, as promised.

In 2012-2013, Smitsman developed the multi-stakeholder dialogue process for the Global Dialogues, which was adopted in 2012-2014 in 9 different countries for the UN Rio+20 civil society inputs.[12][13] Through this work, she trained the SIDS (Small Island Developing States) Youth Leaders under UNESCO for the 2014 UN SIDS Youth inputs for the UN SDG formulations.

From 2011-2018, Smitsman developed and led the EARTHwise Education for Sustainability program for schools in Mauritius, which served as national input for curriculum innovation in Mauritius.[14][15] This program reached over 20,000 students, through which hundreds of teachers were trained by Smitsman.

Human Development and Systems Change

In 2014, Smitsman founded EARTHwise Centre,[4] a non-profit CSR registered company based in Mauritius and operating worldwide as an educational training, research, and leadership center for developing the inner and outer systemic capacities for a thriving world and future. The EARTHwise Projects[16] and collaborative initiatives[4] focus on designing, developing, and applying evolutionary systems, cultures, and capacities for a regenerative and thrivable world. In particular, how to resolve the human condition and systemic barriers that cause our worsening sustainability crisis, including catastrophic biodiversity loss, run-away climate change, and social-economic divisions. Smitsman currently serves as the CEO.

Since 2012, Smitsman has been carrying out research and social change campaigns on how to catalyze social tipping points for societal transformation, which she applied for developing the EARTHwise Tipping Point System,[17] based on her Ph.D. research[8] for addressing the systemic thrivability barriers of our dominant extractive mechanistic growth systems,[18] as well as the r3.0 informational infrastructure for regenerative, redistributive, and resilient economies. It led to the EARTHwise Earth Song project in 2021,[19] supported by the EARTHwise Wisdom Collaboratory[20] and its Indigenous Wisdom Council.[17]

In June 2016, Smitsman gave a TEDx talk in Mauritius about how love can provide a solution for our world in crisis by becoming a "Vector of Love"[21]. Following her TEDx talk, mid-2016, Smitsman was contacted by Robin Gurung from the United States, who grew up in a Bhutanese refugee camp. Gurung told Smitsman about the shadow side of the Bhutanese refugee crisis from the early 1990s and explained how he, together with other Bhutanese refugees, had been living in exile while seeking avenues for reconciliation and the opportunity to return home to family members who had to stay behind. Smitsman agreed to mediate in the conflict resolution, offering the invitation to the Bhutanese government for a multi-stakeholder dialogue for healing, truth, and reconciliation based on her Vector of Love methodology. This became known as the Bhutan Dialogue. From 2016-2018, Smitsman collected 17 letters from high-level organizations in support of such a dialogue and sent this via registered mail to His Majesty Druk Gyalpo Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and His Majesty Fourth Druk Gyalpo Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the Kings of Bhutan, as well His Majesty Willem-Alexander, the King of the Netherlands, and Prime Minister Right Honorable Tshering Tobgay of the Kingdom of Bhutan.[22] The matter remains unresolved today due to the lack of acknowledgment and response to receiving these letters from Bhutanese officials.

Regenerative Economics and Constitutional Design

Since 2019, Smitsman has served as a steward for Hypha[23] and SEEDS (Sowing Ecological, Equitable and Decentralising Societies),[24] a movement of movements serving the Regenerative Renaissance by providing support, systems, and tools for a thrivable world.[2] She co-developed the Regenerative Renaissance tools, currencies, systems, and cultures. As part of this work, Smitsman served as the lead architect from 2020-2021 for the development of The SEEDS Constitution,[25] where she applied her Thrivability Compass design and the 5 Future Archetypes that also feature in her doctoral research.[26]

In 2020-2021, Smitsman served as the lead author for developing the r3.0 Educational Transformation Blueprint,[2][27] which includes 7 Learning Perspectives for regeneration and thriving with key recommendations for the transformations of mainstream education.

Author

In 2020, Smitsman co-authored the Future Humans Trilogy with Jean Houston.
