Louis August Romanet
Louis August Romanet was a fur trader, from France, who spent most of his working life in Canada's far north.[1] He is known for photographs he took, and for writing and lecturing about the north.[2][3]
Romanet served in the French military, before traveling to Canada, at 23.[4] He returned to France, to fight during World War One, in 1918, and he served as an inspector during World War 2 for the Northwest Service Command, an agency that played a role in the construction of the strategic Alaska Highway.[1][3]
When he came to Canada in 1903 he was employed by the French fur company Revillon Freres.[1] He left their employ in 1916, joining the Hudson's Bay Company. He eventually rose to oversee all of the HBC's transport vessels on Canada's northern rivers.
He left the HBC in 1930, and was employed by petroleum companies in the north, including North Star Oil Company, Abasand Oils Ltd.[1]
Romanet also patented a kind of motorized sledge.[1]
