Finding and reversing vandalism

Recently I noticed a huge upturn in the rate at which wikialpha is being vandalized.

I really appreciate that you and User:WritingSnowman have been noticing this vandalism, and reverting some, and drawing others to my attention.

The fact that none of these new people, neither the vandals or the good faith people, uses edit summaries, makes it easy to mistake routine maintenance from vandalism

Please keep advising me of vandalism you see.

Please let me know if you think I made a mistake, and blocked a non-vandal.

I've decided to block people who only committed one act of vandalism for one month. I leave them a standard note on their talk page.

The funny thing is that some of these vandals consider themselves super hackers, when they clearly aren't. I certainly hope I don't meet a genuine super hacker.

Dove Windsor

Not a hoax this time? This version looks legit to me. WritingSnowman (talk) 13:29, 21 October 2022 (UTC)

A heads-up

I subscribed to the Dove Windsor YouTube channel. No pressure. Geo Swan (talk) 16:51, 8 November 2022 (UTC)

your assistance please...

I noticed you made some corrections to the article on the Isis_Fashion_Awards.

That drew my attention to the contributor who first ported that article from the wikipedia.

You might have noticed I asked for input on whether other people thought that articles ported here from the wikipedia, where the individual who ported them was not the sole author of the wikipedia version, and seemed unwilling or unable to acknowledge the work of the original wikipedia contributors, should be subject to deletion as a copyright violation as per Wikialpha:CSD.

I think they should, but I would be generally willing to give newbies a comfortable period to take the steps to bring the articles into compliance.

It is not usually a lot of work. But it dwarfs the half hour or less most wikialpha newbies spend here.

What do you think?

If you see articles that are clearly unauthorized ports of wikipedia articles, please feel free to tell the person, on their user talk page, naming the article. I wrote a template for this purpose: {{Bad WP port}}

I appreciate the attention you give to improve the work of other people. Good volunteers deserve to get a thank you.

Thank you for all your efforts in the past, and thanks in advance if you add this to your list. Only when it is convenient for you, of course.

Wikigems invite

Thank you for the Wikigems invite! I'm busy with many things in real life, so I will most likely not have time to help out with Wikigems. WritingSnowman (talk) 20:45, 19 May 2023 (UTC)

I saw the recent update to Dove Windsor...

I saw a recent update to the Dove Windsor article, that said she recently passed away. That made me sad.

I think I have told her, multiple times, that, although I didn't really know her, I liked her, I appreciated her efforts to improve wikialpha. I told her I subscribed to her YouTube channel, and I would do other things to help her. I really have found her an interesting intelligent talented person - someone I wished well.

I am not sure who may read my note. If there is some help I can give, please contact me, either via a note on User talk:Geo Swan, or an email to [email protected].

I think some people would tell me that the repeated announcements that Dove Windsor committed suicide could be a sign you are unhappy. I don't know you, other than your contributions here. But, from those contributions, you seem to be a nice person, a talented person, of good character, who has a lot to offer to society. So, I would like to encourage you to be happy.
I may not be your target demographic, but I will watch all your YouTube videos, and I will take a crack at reading things you want people to read, on gems, or anything else you care to write about.
I try to think of the suicide announcements as like a form of conceptual art, but they still make me sad. Geo Swan (talk) 19:46, 11 June 2023 (UTC)

my details

You were right, User:Muntasir Mahdi was re-acting badly to having Wikialpha:CSD tags {{db-spam}} and {{db-language}} placed on articles he started.

He was way out of line deleting your fine work.

I did block him, for three months, but, on second thought, I think that block should be indefinite.

I'll extend to you the same offer I extended to WritingSnowman. If you email me at [email protected], my most public, but rarely used ID, I'll share my everyday email - and my phone number. If you think there is a genuine emergency, you can phone me or text me there.

Thanks for your hard work! Geo Swan (talk) 16:09, 13 June 2023 (UTC)

non-English content

You are absolutely correct, that Wikialpha:CSD says non-English content is subject to speedy deletion.

My preferred approach is to leave a {{db-language}}, and then give the contributor a grace period, to translate the material into English.

Usually, the contributors can't be bothered to do so. But I tagged Diana_Valencia, left a heads-up on their talk page, and they did translate it. So, I removed the tag, and gave them a thank you.

What do you think about this approach?

An extra advantage to this approach is, when an article is deleted, the first 60 characters, or so, get put in the deletion log. And, if the first 15 characters are "{{db-language}}", then the deletion log shows why the article was deleted, and that the original author got a warning.

I'm sorry that guy was so nasty to you. Thanks again for your hard work!

Vandal fighting

Thanks for your hard work reverting User:Muntasir Mahdi. This is just like the wild days of Wikipedia vandalism reverting back in the 2000s. WritingSnowman (talk) 02:38, 14 June 2023 (UTC)

Congratulations!

The pictures in Dove Windsor artwork are fabulous!

So, Roman Holiday, or Sabrina? Which is your favourite? Geo Swan (talk) 00:44, 28 February 2024 (UTC)

They're all good. But my personal favourites were Funny Face and Breakfast At Tiffany's. Also The Children's Hour also showcased Hepburn's talent, even througn the silver screen era! Also in Funny Face Hepburn was holding a dove! --SilvaFoxx (talk) 01:03, 28 February 2024 (UTC)

  • We barely know one another. My impression of you is that you are a talented person, who is still working on getting your multiple talents more fully recognized and appreciated. I did not know you had the talent to create wonderful traditional drawings.
Although we barely know one another I want to encourage you. I'll watch every video you want to try to share with people. I'll look at every piece of art you care to share.

Your deletion requests

I deleted all the image files you requested deletion in User_talk:Geo_Swan#File_deletion_requests. I deleted Dove Windsor Artwork. However, I didn't think Wikialpha:CSD authorized me to delete Dover, Dovestones and Dover Realty Co Inc.

Please stop

Warning

You are receiving this warning because:

  1. you blanked an article you didn't write;
  2. or you removed a large block of material from an article you didn't write;
  3. or you hijacked an existing article, turning it into an article about something else;
  4. or you rewrote key passage(s) of an existing article to attack someone;
  5. or you moved an article you didn't write to a nonsense name, or into the Deleted: namespace.

The list of what is ALLOWED here is broad. Wikialpha:CSD lists the kind of material that is subject to deletion.

The list of what is allowed includes (1) articles about scammers; (2) articles by scammers, whatever that might mean; and (3) it even includes articles that look like unrealistic puff-pieces, where someone has written an article about themselves, where they assert they are the greatest rapper in the history of rapping, in Bangladesh.

Please review Wikialpha:CSD. If an article triggers your concern, AND it meets one of those criteria, place a tag on it.

If an article triggers your concern, but it does not meet one of those criteria, your choices include: (1) POLITELY raising your concern, on the article's talk page, or the main contributor's user talk page; or (2) shrugging your shoulders and walking away.

It doesn't matter if material you see here triggers you to hate the author, or the subject of an article, you must be polite.

If the administrator who reviews your deletion tag does not agree with your concern, you can, POLITELY, explain your concern to them again, in more detail. But understand that what is allowed here is very broad.

Note: If you were blocked for vandalism:

  1. and can explain that what you did wasn't vandalism, you can get your block rolled back.
  2. if you can explain that you didn't know any better, and you can make a convincing case that you won't do it again, an administrator may agree to reduce the period of your block.

Ping the administrator who blocked you by leaving a note to them, on your User talk: page, that includes a wikilink to their User: page. [[User:Geo Swan]], for example. When you are blocked you can still write to your User talk: page.
