Nicholas C Savides (born October 25, 1957) is an American realism artist[1][2] known for his figurative paintings, particularly scenes depicting New York City.[3][4] Inspired by the works of Edward Hopper, the calm energy within his art captures a palpable sensation of light and place.[5] His paintings involve urban scenes [6] and architecture, [7] landscapes and nature, and figures and portraiture.[8][9][10][11]

Early life and education

Savides was born in Lafayette, Indiana, and learned to paint from his mother at three. It was in college that he decided to be an artist.[12]

Savides attended Brandeis University and graduated with the highest honors in Fine Arts.

Career and art

After studying under Paul Georges at Brandeis University, Savides began his career as a realist painter. Initially, he focused on paintings of people in interior settings, drawing on Johannes Vermeer as an influence. Later, the effects of light became and stayed a key ingredient in his paintings.[13]

Savides paints realistic urban landscapes with scenes simultaneously capturing the real and the imagined. His compositions bring iconic structures and uncanny corners to life as if conveying a sense of consciousness and curiosity. His paintings capture a sense of time and place with a certain understatement. The elements found in his cityscapes include architecture, nature, murals, graffiti, people, and mystery.[14] Savides strives to create paintings that capture a sense of time and place, making that moment eternal. [15][16]

Savides is a volunteer educator with ArtWorks NYC, teaching art literacy in the NYC public school system and leading museum tours in the Brooklyn Museum.[17]

He was a featured guest in June Middleton’s Minding Your Business, broadcast on April 5, 2010, by Manhattan Neighborhood Network.
