The Constructicons are a group of Decepticons from the Transformers franchise, so named due to their construction vehicle alternate modes, and notable for being the first Combiner introduced in the line.

History

Generation 1

Animated series

The Constructicons were featured in The Transformers, where flashbacks in "The Five Faces of Darkness" showed them or similar robots participating in the creation of Megatron. The six members of the group most often featured in the series were originally residents of Crystal City on Cybertron and friends of Omega Supreme, but later fell victim to Megatron's Robo-Smasher. Reprogrammed for evil, they soon destroyed their former home, prompting Omega to hunt them down in an effort to return them to their former state. Sadly, the Robo-Smasher's effects were irreversible, and the Constructions faked reform in order to lure Omega into it's clutches as well, though he managed to escape without becoming a Decepticon. This led the Guardian Robot to pursue a vendetta against the Constructicons that would lead to multiple clashes over the years.

The Constructicons were later summoned to Earth to join Megatron's forces there, where they gave Megatron the temporary ability to utilize the powers of his minions. Further adventures would see them temporarily being controlled by the Autobots, rebuilding New York City into New Cybertron, and facing off with Omega Supreme as Devastator on an asteroid that wandered into Earth's orbit. They would also be called upon to help Megatron subdue the rebellious Starscream and his Combaticons, but proved to be no match for their combined form of Bruticus.

In The Transformers: The Movie, the Constructicons were part of Megatron's attack force against Autobot City, and proved a virtually unstoppable force once merged into Devastator. However, Optimus Prime eventually arrived with the Dinobots to attack him, and the Constructicons later retreated with their fellows. When Astrotrain expressed his fear that he wouldn't reach Cybertron with such a heavy load, the Constructicons were the first to suggest "survival of the fittest," and joined their fully functional comrades in pushing the most badly damaged of their number out of the ship. When the question of who would succeed Megatron arose, the Constructicons put themselves forward due to their ability to form Devastator, and were soon caught up in the battle that took place aboard Astrotrain. The debate proved moot, as Megatron soon returned having been reformatted into Galvatron, who killed Starscream and then took over the Decepticons, leading them-including the Constructicons-in an attack on Junkion.

The Constructicons later fled Cybertron for Chaar alongside the other Decepticons after Unicron attacked the planet, and would continue to serve as part of the Decepticon forces.

Japanese Series

In Transformers: The Headmasters, the Constructicons were again a recurring part of the Decepticon forces, though they usually only appeared in battle united as Devastator.

In Transformers: Zone, the Constructicons-in their combined form of Devastator-served as one of the Nine Great Generals assembled by Violenjiger, but were driven off by Dai Atlas.

Combiner Wars

The Constructicons also appear in Transformers: Combiner Wars, where three of their number-Long Haul, Scrapper, and Bonecrusher-attack the exiled Megatron in an arena on an unnamed planet but are handily defeated by him. Though thought to be stunned, they are still conscious as Megatron is then visited by Optimus Prime and Windblade and informed that the Council of Worlds holds the Enigma of Combination. The trio are seen communicating with each other via electronic sounds after hearing this revelation.

IDW Publishing

The Constructicons also appear in IDW Publishing's The Transformers as a Decepticon force. On one occasion they battle alongside Menasor against Superion and Defensor, only for the battle to be interrupted by Optimus Maximus. The ensuing battle eventually ended with Devastator's defeat and deconstruction after Optimus Prime and Prowl, who had been fighting him for dominance of the Combiner form, reached an agreement in which Optimus took charge.

Transformers: Universe

Transformers: Robots in Disguise

The Robots in Disguise toyline featured a repaint of Landfill and his components, the Build Team, as Devastator and the Constructicons. "Ask Vector Prime" later revealed that these characters corresponded to an alternate universe in which Megazarak had used a Robo-Smasher on the Build Team and Team Bullet Train, resulting into two Decepticon Combiner teams that formed Devastator and Dominus Trannis. These Constructicons were consumed with animosity towards each other, which in their combined form powered an engine of destruction that would crush anything Megazarak turned them against. Devastator was later drawn into the Universe War by Unicron, though his loss wasn't enough to cripple Megazarak's forces. [1][2]

Films

The Constructicons appeared in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and its associated toy lines.

Animated

Animated series

In Transformers: Animated, the first Constructicons-Mixmaster "Mix" and Scrapper-were created when fragments of the AllSpark brought construction vehicles to life. Originally lackadaisical, carrying only about building and where their next barrel of oil was coming through, the pair initially befriended Bulkhead but were later drawn into the Decepticon camp by Megatron. An explosion later left the pair with amnesia, and they wandered around causing trouble until the Decepticons recovered and recruited them once again. They then assisted in the construction of a Spacebridge for their new master, and later battled the Autobots and Starscream's clones on his behalf. However, after Megatron disappeared, the pair went off on their own, but were eventually found by Bulkhead and recruited for a job in the hopes that they could be redeemed.

Unfortunately, a combination of AllSpark fragments and other components-including the Headmaster unit-resulted in the birth of a new Decepticon, Dirt Boss, whose mob boss mentality and ability to take control of other Transformers and machines soon won him leadership of the Constructicons. He then set out to assert control over the Detroit area by destroying oil supplies, but was eventually thwarted and caught in an explosion with his two teammates. Only Scrapper was seen again before the series' cancellation, having washed up on Dinobot Island and befriended Snarl, with the two of them briefly joining Sari Sumdac's emergency Autobot team before returning to the island.

Transformers: The Complete AllSpark Almanac revealed that Scrapper eventually reunited with his two compatriots, beginning work on a project codenamed "Devastator."
