Andrew Lee Brewer was an episcopalian minister, and founder of a successful military academy, known as Saint Matthew's Hall.[1]

Brewer founded the school in 1865. He was known as imposing extremely stern discipline on his students, including whippings and weeks of solitary confinement.[2]

Lincoln Steffens, who grew up to be a celebrated journalist, was confined for 22 days, for drinking.[2]
